Never again will you want to use basic table salt to season your eatings. We discovered Suzi's sea salts (say that 5 times fast) at our favorite local farmers' market last season and have been giving the gift of gorgeous, delicious designer salts to everyone we know who can appreciate such a delicacy. Which is you, of course. Here's the story of the Beautiful Briny Sea salts straight from Suzi herself:
Give us the abridged backstory on how Beautiful Briny Sea came to be. SUZI: My hometown is Atlanta, but for over twelve years, I have owned a small taqueria and catering company in Columbia, SC. While I have enjoyed every moment of it, I was also ready for a change. I couldn’t imagine choosing a path that took me away from the kitchen, but I had a strong desire to create something for others to use in their own homes. Something that was 100% handmade and produced using ingredients grown and gathered with integrity. What could be more romantic than salt harvested with old wooden rakes, locally grown herbs, foraged mushrooms, and tables at the neighborhood farmer’s market? It’s also such a treat to be back in my hometown with my family and friends!
Favorite thing to cook with your sea salts? SUZI: Grilled vegetables, vinaigrettes, and popcorn.
And tell us what exactly makes your product awesome? SUZI: I use locally grown ingredients. Truly Living Well is less than a mile away from my studio in the Old Fourth ward, so it’s fabulous to get fresh rosemary and lavender that was grown just two blocks away.
Tell us more about the flavors of the sea salts. SUZI: Well, I have five flavors: Rosemary, Lavender, Mushroom, Pink Peppercorn, Truffle, Santa Salt (rosemary/pink peppercorn), Magic Unicorn (magic, obviously). In order to maintain the integrity of the product, I try and create blends using only one ingredient. That said, if I find myself unable to resist mixing smoked paprika with meyer lemon juice and locally grown garlic, I give it a goofy name. Hence, Magic Unicorn.
Anything else people should know about? SUZI: We reuse or recycle 100% of any packing material that comes into our shop, which means we empty our trash can less that three times a month. We are a member of Georgia Organics and Slow Food. Oh, and I love showing people how to make salt, so anyone is welcome to visit me at the shop!
