Safe to say that H. Harper Station firmly holds the current title of “the place in Atlanta to get the perfectly-crafted classic cocktail.” Just ask Garden & Gun. Or Atlanta Magazine. Or, hey, us. And it’s not just because the converted train depot just oozes old-school cool; they also happen to take their classic cocktails quite seriously. None more so than Jerry Slater, owner of H. Harper and drink-slinger extraordinaire. And because you should only learn such serious drink traditions from the best, you’ll be watching, learning, drinking and absorbing all of his expertise in three classic cocktail recipesone bourbon, one tequila and one gin-based. And, yes, that lineup will include his trade secrets in making the perfect (much acclaimed) Old-Fashioned that makes this joint so famous to those imbibing enthusiasts.
“I think people these days tend to overthink cocktails,” he tells us as he casually grates an orange. “I’m all about using quality spirits. These are drinks you can easily make at home, nothing complicated involving rare potions or crazy foams.” We started doing these classes as ‘Staff Training,’ and then invited customers to join. It got such a good response, it became a fun event for everyone to learn together.”
While you’re watching and learning (and tasting) the magic of Mr. Slater, you can sample the Southern snacks of H. Harper Station’s brand new chef, Joseph Ward (formerly the sous chef at Woodfire Grill): Candied Bacon CrackerJacks, Deviled Eggs with pickled Benton’s bacon, and pimiento cheese on cracker toast, perfect to balance out the simple, age-old enjoyment of a well-crafted cocktail.
And, hey, you know there's a Scoutmob deal to use here, right?** Fire up the ol' app after the class and take advantage of a full meal while you're here.
