When someone says they offer red velvet waffles for human consumption, we leap up, slap our collective napkin onto the table and demand an explanation. And then sit down, apologize profusely and ask for a sample (politely, mind you.). Because Sunday Brunchtime? It ain’t a joke, kids. This tone-setter for the week is arguably the most important most important meal of the day. And The Pinewood Tippling Room is layin’ it down (on the table) faster than we can gobble it up. The Decatur watering hole is rapidly garnering a rep for topping off a solid night on the town. But on lazy Sundays, something is different – the familiar, homey joint is somehow more familiar and, well, homier. Everything is served with a big ol’ dollop of Southern hospitality and a touch of whimsy (and if you’re lucky, chantilly cream).Brooks and Fable, co-owners/conspirators have created a comfy get-together haven. Their passion for all things Southern shines through in the dishes and drinks, crafted with deliberate love and care. Here, homemade is king. Tuck into some blackened shrimp and grits, and you’ll suspect that these nostalgic, personal dishes aren’t your run-of-the-mill Sunday fare. And after sneaking some of your brunch buddy’s bourbon custard French toast (the Pinewood Perdue), all of your wildest suspicions are confirmed. Brunch at the Pinewood is the time to indulge in things you normally wouldn’t. Handcrafted cocktail things. A certain sweet bourbon, brandy, whole milk and vanilla concoction with freshly grated nutmeg over top, springs to mind. (Or mayhaps a freshly-squeezed mimosa?) Don’t forget – you still have to choose a dessert to top off the feast. How does a fresh lemon tart with all the fixins (fresh berries and mint) sound? Kick back and enjoy the best meal of the week with friends and family, and realize – brunch doesn’t have to feel like a big deal, to be one.
