The story of the Pinewood, the handsome new communal watering hole in downtown Decatur, all started with a classic romance: "We were just two crazy kids in love... with whiskey," jokes co-owner Brooks, who opened the joint with cocktail wizard T. Fable Jeon just a few weeks ago. The Southern-born, bourbon-loving duo both share a deep appreciation not just for good spirits, but for the pleasure of imbibing with friends, whether over a fancy cocktail at a lounge or a glass of whiskey out on a porch. Falling somewhere between those two, the Pinewood Tippling Room is a place where you can kick back and enjoy a laid-back meal from a family recipe book, or set up shop at the bar with a moonshine Manhattan. The Pinewood puts all of the effort and none of the pretense into serving a damn-near perfect beverage, from creating their own house sodas to chainsawing their ice into blocks. And with a menu that combines the work of consulting chef Julia LeRoy and, well, Brooks' mama (and grandmama), those Southern victuals coming out of the kitchen are equally enticing. It's enough to make one wonder how on earth it's taken so long to find a spot where a fried bologna sandwich could be washed down with a bottled huckleberry-vodka cocktail or an Old Fashioned on draft. This joint might feel like it's been around for ages, but you'll be getting your first taste of it just weeks after the brown craft paper came down from the windows. After having your first taste of the Pinewood's always-changing, spiked "welcome punch," you'll start supping, with one of the Pinewood's simple, classically Southern entrees. The traditional family recipes, like the seasoned pecans, sidle up quite nicely to creative dishes like "chicken tickers" (deep-fried chicken hearts). You can wash it all down with your choice of any two of the Pinewood's cocktails, a selection of potions that range from the light and refreshing, a la a hibiscus gin fizz, to the bold and ballsy (see: the Decatur Discretionary, a moonshine riff on the Manhattan). And you can do all this in the Pinewood's welcoming environs, a place where we imagine neighbors will be cheers-ing their bourbon & (house-made) colas over Southern snacks for a long, long time. And just think: all those years later, you'll get to say you were one of the Pinewood's original tipplers.
