Like most Pilates instructors, Carol started out as a dancer with a back injury. That was 15 years ago, and since then she's built her Noe Valley studio into a low-stress, high intensity Pilates mecca (and her body into a temple of strength and alignment). But even though Carol and her team are the best of the best, don't expect a holier-than-thou attitude: they're here to help you tone and strengthen your body like never before, but that doesn't mean you can't have fun while doing it.
Sanchez Street Studios comprises two floors in a comfortable, light-filled building which has been a neighborhood fixture for over a decade. When Carol started out, she mainly used the large downstairs studio, but has since expanded upwards and teaches Reformer classes and private clients upstairs in the former apartment space. The entire studio has a calm, community-focused vibe, which serves to de-stress you and allows you to focus on the workout at hand. That workout, of course, is the one engineered by Joseph Pilates, the German fitness expert who designed a series of machines (they look scary, but don't be afraid) and movements that lengthen and tone muscles. Do it once, and you'll be hooked; do it 4 times with this handy class sampler, and you'll start to see and feel a difference in the way you stand, move, and go about your daily life.
