I remember the first time I visited Crystal City. Wandering around the labyrinth of basement hallways and garages, I thought, “Wow! This is a mole-person’s dream! A vampire’s paradise!” And then came The Diamond Derby. Utilizing this city-beneath-the-city to create one helluva bike race, this year’s Derby has expanded to become a bona fide multi-sensory experience. Along with the velo races, which, by the way, are as fun to cheer on as they are to actually participate in (everyone’s encouraged), this Eric Northman-approved subterranean shindig will also feature so much more. See a fashion show featuring designs by DC local Philisa Williams, a pop-up lounge featuring DC favorite DJ Lucas Smudge, as well as art installations and enough libations to keep you buzzing. (Each Scoutmob party-goer will get two drink tickets good toward two Fat Tire brews or specialty “Mob” cocktails.)
And to make sure you still get your daily dose of Vitamin D, this ticket package also includes a one-day pass for Capital Bikeshare. Although the Metro is close, a bike ride to Crystal City is way more fun. And also pretty convenient. Just hop on the Mt. Vernon Trail and follow the crowd, which will likely include everyone from the hipster who wants to show off his hand-crafted fixie to the lycra-wearing professional bike racer to the dandy on his cruiser casually smoking a pipe. “This is really an event for the entire community,” said James Kerns, a former bike messenger and now one of the event’s organizers. And to remind you (and the community) forever about how much fun we all had, each ticket holder will go home with a specially designed, limited edition Diamond Derby T-Shirt and all the fake mustaches your pockets can carry. Best mustache ride ever!
