We throw around fancy words like tannins, legs, acidity, bouquet, and mouthfeel like we have a degree in drinking, but let’s be honest here: do we really know what we're talking about? Enter Savor Wine Boutique’s Inside the Cellar class series, where we can learn about wine from the experts, and sample a few boutique wines, too.
We’ve all fancied ourselves a sommelier at one point or another. We throw around fancy words like tannins, legs, acidity, bouquet, and mouthfeel like we have a degree in drinking, but let’s be honest here: do we really know what we're talking about? How much of our wine knowledge came from our eccentric aunt who happens to drink (a lot) of wine, and how much of it came from someone who actually knows what they’re talking about? We’re willing to bet that you, like us, are pretty much making it up as you go. This is where Savor Wine Boutique comes in. Savor carries small-batch wines from all over the world, giving us a unique and hard-to-find selection of wines we can’t get at the grocery store. Tucked into Kirkwood Station’s main street, Savor also provides the neighborhood with an indispensable service- wine education. Inside the Cellar, their new seminar series, takes us… ahem…. inside the cellars of some our favorite local wine experts and sommeliers to learn how the pros taste and choose wine, as well as where it comes from, and what makes it great (besides the taste and alcohol content.) Even if you really do know a bit about wine already, we guarantee you're going to learn something new during these classes- and at the very least, you'll have the opportunity to taste unique, small batch wines you can’t get anywhere else in the city.
You’ll be taught by real wine experts- not just your crazy aunt who always has purple teeth- these teachers really know their stuff. You’ll learn from people like Jane Garvey, Ph.D., CSW- she’s a Certified Specialist of Wine (yes, that’s a real thing, awarded by the Society of Wine Educators!) She’s explored viticulture - the study of grapes - from Europe to South America, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa. Of course, she’s also visited wineries and tasted wines across North America as well. And she’s bringing all that knowledge to Kirkwood with classes on wine from Oregon and South Africa- with tastes of the main wines from each region along with stories from her travels. Every class features a different expert, so whatever strikes your fancy, you'll be able to learn about it in a 90-minute session. And if you needed even more reason to go, wine students get special discounts on featured wines so you can take ‘em home and keep enjoying them. So take one class, or take all of them- when you're’ done, you’ll be able to hold your own in a group of sophisticated sommeliers.
