If there’s a restaurant out there that captures the spirit of ATL better than Mason Tavern, we’d say you’re fibbing. An internationally-inspired menu, a bar built around local Georgia craft brews, and locally sourced ingredients make this watering hole the genuine article.
IIf there’s a restaurant out there that captures the spirit of ATL better than Mason Tavern, we’d say you're fibbing. An menu drawing from inspiration found all over the metro area, a bar built around local Georgia craft brews, locally sourced ingredients, and named after Mason Mill Park just around the corner, the tavern’s first order of business is serving the North Decatur community as a true public house. Kabeer Khurana graduated from Emory several years ago and teamed up with longtime friend and Atlanta native Baker Barnett to bring this watering hole to life. The duo had an inkling that they’d always wanted to open a bar, and when they found the space in a North Decatur shopping center amidst a neighborhood revitalization, that’s what cinched it for them. Formerly a dive bar that didn’t add much to the proximity, they gutted the interior down to the original brick walls and concrete floors. Now, we love a dive bar as much as the next person, but you know what we love even more? A comfortable yet elegant spot to wet our whistle, while chowing down on elevated pub fare. Yep, we’re digging the classic look full of dark woods and chocolate leather with the updated sensibilities of modern lighting and reclaimed wood. Never hoity-toity, it’s a casually refined space, including a bar built with railroad ties- nothing says Atlanta like hitchin’ a ride on the train.
An eye for local, seasonal ingredients, and inspiration pulled from North Decatur’s own melting pot of cuisines takes the traditional “burger and a beer” dinner to a new level of nights out. And now dear Scouts, you’re part of the story. Your dining companion can be a new acquaintance or an old friend, but one things for sure: must love ATL. Ok, now that we’ve got that out of the way, time for appetizers. Try the cheddar and corn hushpuppies, served with red chili jam- the fluffy yet cheesy inside pairs perfectly with the slightly Asian influence of the tangy, spicy and sweet jam. Or go all Southern and kick it off with a few deviled eggs flavored with curry and sweet & spicy pickles. Even though it’s smothered in Russian dressing, the Tavern Burger is about as American as it gets. (And by “American” we mean “meaty.”) Made from a house blend of short rib, brisket, and chuck, smothered in American cheese and the aforementioned Russian dressing, the burger is served with spicy bread & butter pickles and your choice of hand-cut shoestring fries or house slaw. Vegetarians, we haven’t forgotten about you- the spiced cauliflower sandwich draws from a Mediterranean inspiration, served with baba ghanoush, red peppers, and crispy chickpeas, all stuffed into a warm pita.
We know you’re wondering how this place can get even more local, and we’re here to tell you about the best part: the bar. Featuring 10 taps, the beverage choices are… wait for it… all local. Yep, all 10 taps feature the brews that make Georgia stand out as a craft beer hub. They pour Atlanta’s only cider, Treehorn, along with selections from Monday Night Brewing, Orpheus, Blue Tarp, and more. We totally understand if you can’t make up your mind, which is why your dinner comes with two flights of beer. Yes, we said flights. That means you get a samplin’ of three beers to go with your tasty tavern fare. Go ahead, take a poll. Whoever loves Atlanta the most gets to be your date, and we guarantee you’ll love your city even more after visiting Mason Tavern.
